The real key in making ethanol sustainable will be using excess plant material like leaves, stems and roots. As long as biofuel requires edible material, there will be obstacles to overcome. There is even controversy asking farmers to use certain dead crops, because they would otherwise be made into hay for livestock.

Pity The Guardian doesn't fact-check. They might correct the article to read: maize (what the rest of the world calls corn). Considering maize was cultivated in the Americas & spread to the rest of the world by settlers, I think Americans can call it whatever they want.
